Files in, video out, files back

ReelVault

Turn any file into a video that survives compression and re-uploads, then turn the video back into the exact same file. Everything runs in this tab; nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Header. Your file gets a small header: its name, size and a CRC-32 checksum. It is optionally compressed (deflate) and encrypted (AES-256-GCM, key from PBKDF2).
  2. Frames. Every bit becomes a black or white square on a 128×128 grid. Each frame starts with its own index and the total frame count.
  3. Decoding. The decoder averages each square's brightness and lets repeated copies of a frame vote on every bit. That's why the video survives compression.

Videos made here decode with the reelvault command-line tool, and its --robust videos decode here. The tool's default lossless .avi reels are much smaller but need the command-line tool; browsers can't play them.
